by William Blake The Bible transforms people. One of the ways the Bible transforms Christians is in our relationship to money - Christian financial planning is central to the teachings of the Bible. In fact, there are more references in the Bible to money than to salvation. Christian financial planning is important to God. God created all of mankind for a purpose. If you struggle with understanding God’s purpose for you personally seek out help from a reliable source. A Christian’s life is centered on the doing of God’s will and bringing honor and praise to him. The way a Christian deals with his finances has an affect on his relationship with God. Don’t forget that everything we have comes from God. Therefore, we must understand His purpose for us. When we live in harmony with his purpose our lives are more stable and tranquil. Christian financial planning begins with giving back to God in our tithes and offerings to the church. When we plan our finances on a foundation of faith, God promises to open the windows of heaven to prosper us in everything we do. The Bible is a great source of information on every subject and finances is no exception. Its principles can give guidance that will help a person make wise financial decisions, no matter what their religious beliefs. The counsel found in the Bible can help anyone see the need to pay off high debts and work hard to become debt free. God does not expect his servants to be impoverished. God wants his people to be happy and enjoy prosperity and be a comfort to those around them. The Bible is full of practical counsel for our financial lives. Take time to study and research God’s Word to see how it can be of help to you. Always pray as husband and wife before you make decisions about how to use your money. Your whole life will start to change when you follow God’s plan for your finances, and then God will be able to change the world through you. Rev. Soong-Chan Rah (formerly of MA, now based in Chicago) blogs about his reflections on Barack Obama in this very moving post at Sojourners: I Am Barack Obamaby Soong-Chan Rah 11-05-2008 Whenever John McCain and Sarah Palin would ask: “Who is Barack Obama?” I would cringe. The implication to me was pretty clear. Obama is an outsider. Obama is not your typical American. Obama is not like “us.” He’s an Arab. A Muslim. A Terrorist. I cringed because I am Barack Obama. Or at least my life mirrors his in many ways. I too am a child of immigrants. My father also immigrated to the U.S. from a nation that begins with K and has five letters. I too have a funny sounding name. I too grew up in a single parent home. I became a Christian in a church that would be considered outside the boundaries of a typical white evangelical church. Obama and I graduated from the same undergraduate college. We hold graduate degrees from the same institution. We have both worked in community organizing. We’re both married to strong, independent women. We are both fathers of two elementary-aged kids. We both live in Chicago. I am Barack Obama. This past weekend I officiated a wedding for a couple who had been dating for more than 15 years. I was so moved by their deep joy and love that radiated from their faces throughout the ceremony. Witnessing their simple and profound act of holding hands and pledging their love and fidelity to each other was a great source of inspiration. Their celebration of commitment reminded me of the relationships in my own life and the yearning to reach out and hold one another in love no matter what life brings. Placing our hands and hearts in love keeps us grounded in the Spirit throughout all of life - in times of adventure, wonder, challenge, and most especially in those moments when endurance is needed. Let us tend to our souls this week by holding firmly the hands of love in our lives. Blessings this day! Denise Pyles, M.Div.
